A modular visual identity system for DStv, designed for seamless adaptation across broadcast, digital, and out-of-home touchpoints.

Overview

DStv is one of Africa's largest media and entertainment platforms, serving millions of subscribers across the continent. With an extensive content portfolio spanning sports, entertainment, news, and lifestyle, DStv needed a visual identity system capable of reflecting its scale, diversity, and commitment to premium viewing experiences.

The Challenge

The existing visual language was fragmented across touchpoints—broadcast stations, digital platforms, and out-of-home advertising operated with inconsistent branding. As DStv expanded its content offerings and geographic presence, a cohesive, scalable identity system became critical to reinforcing brand recognition and maintaining quality across all consumer interactions.

The challenge was to create a modular system that could: - Unify disparate broadcast channels under a cohesive brand language - Adapt seamlessly across broadcast packaging, digital interfaces, and outdoor environments - Support DStv's diverse content categories (sports, entertainment, movies, etc.) while maintaining brand consistency - Future-proof the system for emerging platforms and formats

The Idea

We developed a comprehensive modular visual identity system anchored in a flexible geometric design language. Rather than a single rigid lockup, the system provides a set of components—typography, color hierarchies, graphic elements, and motion principles—that work together while allowing individual expression for specific channels and content verticals.

The identity prioritizes: - **Modularity**: A library of elements that combine in multiple ways - **Clarity**: Clear visual hierarchy and readability across screen sizes and broadcast quality - **Distinctiveness**: A recognizable geometric language that stands out in the competitive media landscape - **Adaptability**: Rules-based system that scales from 4K broadcast down to social media thumbnails
